“Birdland,” an original and one of a kind sculpture is a captivating piece from the Horizon series. It is inspired by the serene beauty of Lake Superior’s north shore, and by the work of George Morrison (1919–2000), the Native American Abstract Expressionist painter and sculptor whom I had the privilege to meet.
The horizon serves as an organizing structure for visual space—our most fundamental means of orientation.
Carving and casting techniques are used to bring forth a painterly abstraction that feels both contemporary and timeless. The abstract landscape takes the suggestive form of a bird. The glowing jewel tone colors offer a rich tranquil vibe. The deep orange sun and semi-circle represent the cycle of night to day and back again. One side is frosted which captures light in a sumptuous way. The edge is wrapped in variegated copper leaf adding a warm skin to the piece.
It’s a soothing and symbolic work of fine craft offering a sense of peace and reflection.
The two separate cast glass pieces easily stack and museum gel is included to ensure secure installation.
Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the piece as well.
